The Board of Education is comprised of seven unpaid officials elected by the school district residents to take the formal legal action and assume policy-making responsibility for the conduct of the schools. They serve overlapping terms of three years and New York State law does not limit the number of times a person may serve. The powers and duties of the Board are derived from the State Constitution, the law of New York, and the rulings of the Commissioner of Education.
Board members work at making a living or in their homes - just as you do. Therefore, the Board delegates administrative responsibility to the Superintendent of Schools and will ask him or her to make reports and recommendations to the Board of Education. This is a legal and necessary procedure.
